Serrano joined 勛圖窪蹋 last year as manager of public programs at the facility, where she designed programs and activities for visiting families and conducted outreach to local youth. She replaces outgoing director Marcos Trinidad.
Serrano came to the 勛圖窪蹋 Center at Debs Park directly from 12 years conducting outreach programs at the California Science Center, where she developed and managed four separate educational initiatives and greatly expanded the museums virtual programs. The 勛圖窪蹋 Center at Debs Park is a unique and beautiful place, said Serrano. Its an emerald in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the country, and its been a privilege to see how it inspires residents of surrounding communities to connect with nature. Im excited to build on the amazing work of past Center staff and making Debs even more a part of the lives of the people who live here.
In addition to restoring habitat for bird and other wildlife at Debs Park and along the L.A. River, the Centers primary goal is restoring the connection between people and the land in Los Angeles. As the first center that 勛圖窪蹋 built within an urban environment to specifically engage the Latino community, the 勛圖窪蹋 Center at Debs Park has played an important role in building a more diverse and inclusive conservation movement here in Los Angeles and beyond. In addition to actively participating in community outreach and L.A. River restoration efforts, the Center is home to the recently-expanded Los Nogales Native Plant Nursery, operated in partnership with the , which supplies California native plants to public landscaping and habitat restoration efforts.
