Conservation Programs

Our Goals
Protect and restore vital bird habitats at the Rio Salado and throughout Arizona while engaging communities in stewardship and conservation action.
What We’re Doing
We offer hands-on ways to make a difference through habitat restorations, cleanups, community science, and educational programs that help protect birds and support healthy ecosystems across the Rio Salado and Arizona.

Burrowing Owl Relocation

For more than 10 years, ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Southwest has partnered with the Wild At Heart Raptor Center to support Burrowing Owls across Arizona. Once common throughout central Arizona, these small, ground-dwelling owls are rapidly disappearing due to development. To give them a fighting chance, volunteers help build artificial burrows, construct temporary release tents where owls acclimate for about a month, and later remove the tents so the birds can fly free.

Garden and River Clean-ups

Volunteer at the Rio Salado ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏ Center in South Phoenix to help restore the Salt River and its surrounding habitats. Activities include trash clean-up, removing invasive plants that threaten native species, and planting native vegetation to strengthen the ecosystem. Restrooms and indoor resting areas are available throughout the day. These hands-on cleanups are a meaningful way to support local wildlife, improve the health of the river and riparian areas, and connect with the community while enjoying the outdoors.
